WHAT TO INCLUDE

What Information Might Be Included On a Website?

If you are going to construct a website you need to have a clear picture of what you want your website to do, who the main audience is, who else might be accessing your site, and what you'd like your site to look like.

Union Sites

To get an idea of what some other teacher union websites look like please visit: http://www.nysut.org/cps/rde/xchg/nysut/hs.xsl/links_3348.htm. On that page is a listing of union sites that you can visit. Some of them are very good and may give you ideas of what you might want to incorporate into your site.

Union sites are basically tools for providing your members with information. Information you might include on your website can come from many sources:

(1) Your newsletter – there are ways to put your entire newsletter on a website.

(2) Your Cabinet Meeting Minutes.

(3) Union leaders and Webmasters can receive information from their state and national affiliates that can be posted on the local’s website.  The organizations I receive information from and their E-mail addresses are:
  1. The NYSUT Leader - awatson@nysutmail.org
  2. Inside AFT - online@aft.org
  3. AFT Retiree E-news - retirees@aft.org
  4. AFT LeaderNet - leadernet@aft.org
  5. AFT e-Activist Network - e-activist@aft.org
  6. AFT + Member Benefits - aftplus@aft.org
  7. Working Families e-Activist Network - peoplepower@aflcio.org
  8. AFT Public Affairs - publicaffairs@aft.org
  9. Central New York Labor Federation (AFL-CIO)  - mark@cnylabor.org

(4) If you have some historical records of your union you might be able to entice a history teacher to do some research and write up your local’s history to be put on the website.

include

(5) You might want to include links to union benefits offered by your state and national affiliates. For example:

  1. NYSUT Member Benefits Trust  - http://www.nysut.org/cps/rde/xchg/nysut/hs.xsl/49.htm
  2. AFT +  - http://www.aft.org/aftplus/
  3. AFL-CIO Union Plus - http://www.unionprivilege.org/

(6) You might consider including information about your school district and the surrounding community. It’s good public relations and gives visitors an idea of your community.

(7) While the WGTA site is primarily for our teacher members, remember that anyone can -- and will -- access your site.  We have had parents, students, retirees and school board candidates indicate to us that they have visited our website.  We have had district administrators, candidates looking to apply for a teaching job, the press and student teachers visit the site. Pictures of our newly renovated buildings with district phone numbers and addresses have been added on purpose!  If we can entice a teaching candidate to apply to WG based on a website visit -- so much the better! We try to have information there for anyone that happens to visit us.

Business Sites

A main purpose of a business website is to sell a product. Successful business websites typically contain the following:

(1) They have an easy to use navigation system that gets the user to their desired products.

(2) There are photographs and brief but accurate descriptions of the objects being offered.

(3) Prices are clearly marked.

(4) Sizes, if appropriate, are clearly marked. There is a size conversion chart if needed.

(5) There is a convenient yet secure method of payment (I have used PayPal on the business sites I have constructed).

(6) Contact information for customers with questions is clearly indicated in several locations on the website.
